Getting fed up

We only have security catches on a few of our cupboards i.e. the one with our expensive crockery in, the one with all the noxious cleaning products, the fridge. The rest mostly contains stuff that I don't have an issue with them playing with i.e pots, pans, chopping boards, baking trays etc.

However, just recently, I've become utterly fed up with the endless routine of putting pots/pans/chopping boards/baking trays back into the cupboards only for Sam or Jacob to pull them out again immediately.

Even more annoying are the DVDs that spend more time out on the floor than they do in the drawer. Up until now, its just been a case of slotting them back into the drawer at the end of the day and wiping most of the stickiness off the cases. However, they've now worked out to get the DVDs out of the cases so I spend an awful lot of my time putting DVDs back into cases; mostly scratched, sticky and generally unplayable DVDs, unfortunately.

I've decided that enough is enough - I can put up with constantly tidying up if I have to, but when they start destroying stuff that cost a lot of money, I'm going to have to put my foot down. I can't expect them to understand any of this and even though I'm constantly repeating "don't play with the DVDs/CDs" (delete as appropriate), Jacob has the memory of a goldfish and forgets five seconds after I've said it.

So on Saturday Doug will have a little job of putting safety catches on everything. They can try playing with their toys for a change, its not like they haven't got more toys than the ELC.

Bah, mutter, grumble :-(

Sam can open the security catch on the unit that houses the DVD, VHS and cable box. And he's only a year old.

He's even managed to open the stair gate on one occasion, monkey up the stairs and play about on the landing before I realised what had happened.

at around 2, my son could tell which vhs tape was which, turn on the tv and vcr, load a tape and play it. they learn so damned fast.

putting the units higher than they could reach worked for a while.

our security gates worked by pressure (expanding against both walls to secure them) so they didn't get them open - but we found them climbing them.

when our kids were 3 and 4, they learned to drag a chair to the front door, unlatch the security chain and open the front door. We found them down the street in 2 feet of snow wearing nothing but a diaper and boots.
