My twopenneth about Valentines

I had a lovely Valentines evening. I know its utterly commercial, but its nice to make a fuss of each other once in a while; Doug isn't very spontaneous (he always thinks that if he tries to surprise me, he'll get it badly wrong) and I think he likes having a specific date to put in his PDA where he knows he has to buy me a card and flowers. Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Birthday, that does me nicely on the flower front. And I do occasionally get them at other times; when he went to Africa with his pals about six years ago, he arranged for a bouquet to be delivered to my office while he was away with a note saying how much he was missing me. Awwww :-)

Anyway, back to Valentines. We haven't actually been out on 14th Feb since we've had the kids, just had a nice dinner at home. Last year was a little weird as Sam was still in Neo Natal and most of the conversation over dinner was about him and how soon we thought he'd be home with us. This year we made it nice and easy by buying all the food from M&S and just heating it up; even my flowers were from M&S and were absolutely fantastic:-

White roses are my favourite; I do like red roses, but white and yellow are my favourite colours of rose - just so pristine and perfect. I keep going into the dining room to stare at them :-)

Having read Antonia's blog about her best ever Valentine's Day, I started to think about my favourite and decided that, hands down, the best ever was in 2001. Doug took me to Italy for a week, starting off in Florence and then taking the train up to Venice.

We stayed in a beautiful hotel (The Kette) the perfect distance away from St Marks (not too close, not too far), started the day with a champagne breakfast, went for a gondola ride, had lunch on the Rialto, a little light shopping, followed by dinner at La Carvela, a marvellous restaurant just round the corner from the hotel. We enjoyed the city, the hotel and the restaurant so much that we went back in December 2003, when I was about 10 weeks pregnant with Jacob - so considerably less champagne and pate that time :-) In fact, the photo above is taken from that holiday; our pictures from 2001 are on that rather old fashioned medium, 35mm film.

Charming post, if a little incongruous after the cocks!

There's a good side to (almost) everything. I'm glad that you had a good valentine's day. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the attention he gave you (and you him) on Wednesday.

I'm afraid that the commercialness of it has ruined it for me. Also, we've been married long enough (22 years) that I know my wife loves me and giving me jewelry or candy on a certain day (or me her) doesn't convey that sentiment. Its the little things she does everyday for me, and I for her, that tells me how she feels for me. We never have been a jewelry-type of people anyway. And flowers growing in our yard every year beats cut flowers hands down - for us.

Please don't take anything I've said here or on in my blog as a criticism of you or your enjoyment of the day. I am merely trying to express how I feel.

No, that's ok - I remember last year that Doug bought me a card with a list of things like "running for the bus", "making the tea", "eating breakfast" which then said "Ten Insignificant Moments When I have Loved You With All My Heart". That sort of sums it up, I think :-)
